Welltower Inc. (NYSE:HCN) has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI) for the first time. The DJSI is considered among the most important global indicators of sustainability performance.

“Our inclusion in the DJSI is an important milestone for Welltower. It demonstrates our commitment to being a global leader in sustainability,” said Jeff Miller, Welltower’s Chief Operating Officer, who has responsibility for the company’s sustainability program. “Our focus on sustainability is an integral part of our strategic investment in healthcare infrastructure, with a focus on driving wellness.”

Welltower’s sustainability efforts have also achieved a number of other important sustainability-related objectives.

  • Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark Green Star Designation indicating high sustainability performance for the second consecutive year.
  • In August, Welltower released its 2015 Corporate Social Responsibility report. It was the company’s first report to be prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative G4 Core standards and fourth annual social responsibility report.   • Two properties from the company’s portfolio recently received LEED Silver certification.
  • The company has certified an additional 16 facilities in 2016 through its proprietary Green Arrow initiative, which sets goals for energy, water, and waste reduction and indoor air quality best practices.

Companies are selected for inclusion on DJSI based on an analysis of economic, environmental and social factors. According to DJSI, it was created in 1999 as the first global index to provide complex benchmarks for measuring corporate sustainability. More than 3,400 companies were invited to participate in this year’s DJSI Corporate Sustainability Assessment.
