PLYMOUTH, Mich., May 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- John Deere has been
named winner of the sixth annual SAE Foundation Gordon Millar
Award. The award, which is funded by AVL, is given in special
recognition of an individual or organization that best demonstrates
continuous philanthropic support of the SAE Foundation Mission to
encourage and increase student participation and achievement in
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
"John Deere has created a powerful model for supporting STEM
education," said Don Manvel,
Chairman, AVL Americas. "The company
specifically complements its investments in effective STEM programs
that not only make them stronger, but also create a rich culture of
mentoring and coaching essential for the growth of STEM. It is
fitting to note that Dr. Millar himself had a long and
distinguished career at John Deere, where he was Vice President of
Engineering."
"To be recognized for our dedication to STEM at John Deere is
incredibly humbling," said Pat
Barnes, Program Director, John Deere Inspire, the Deere STEM
program, who accepted the award. "The goal of John Deere Inspire
and all of our employee volunteers is to significantly increase the
number of high-quality students, including underrepresented talent,
who enroll, graduate, and are successfully working in STEM-related
professions. We are proud to share the commitment of the SAE
Foundation to help the students of today become the innovators of
the future."
