Demo follows successful CAT-1 technology
trial on T-Mobile’s network
Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS), a leader in LTE
chipsets for IoT and M2M, is providing technology to T-Mobile for
its LTE CAT-1 technology demo at CTIA’s Super Mobility Week in Las
Vegas, September 9-11. CAT-1, or Category 1, refers to the lower
throughput speed (10 Mbps) defined in the existing LTE standard now
being used for low cost and low power IoT and M2M applications. The
demo follows a successful network and device trial of CAT-1
technology conducted by T-Mobile and Sequans over the last quarter
where the companies verified that LTE CAT-1 devices are compatible
with CAT-3 and 4 device counterparts on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network.
Sequans is the first chipmaker to develop LTE CAT-1 technology and
currently the only chipmaker providing LTE CAT-1 technology to
T-Mobile to help M2M customers migrate from 2G to 4G LTE
networks.
“We’ve been working with T-Mobile for several months on a now
successful LTE CAT-1 network trial, and we are pleased to power
T-Mobile’s public demo of the technology at Super Mobility Week,”
said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO. “Our work together proved that LTE
CAT-1 devices are compatible with T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network and
that T-Mobile’s network is ready to support low-cost LTE-based
solutions for the M2M market today.”
“As the Un-carrier, we’re excited to show our customers that LTE
CAT-1 chipsets and modules on our 4G LTE network, like those from
Sequans, can deliver a future-proof network migration path for
their M2M products and solutions,” said Rusty Lhamon, director, M2M
at T-Mobile. “The technology also provides cost and power benefits
for IoT and M2M applications, enabling our customers to move off of
2G to our Data Strong 4G LTE network—a win-win situation for
T-Mobile and our customers.”
Sequans’ operator-approved CAT-1 solution, the Calliope LTE
Platform, is already powering new M2M devices. It has also won two
industry awards—an “IoT Innovations” award from Connected World
Magazine, and a “Leading Lights 2015” award for “Most Innovative
IoT/M2M Strategy,” from Light Reading.
