May is Mental Health Month

In recognition of May being Mental Health Month, Health Net, Inc. and its behavioral health subsidiary, Managed Health Network, Inc. (MHN), are proud to announce their support of the national Stamp Out Stigma campaign for the second year in a row.

Launched by the Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness (ABHW) and its member companies last year, the campaign aims to help change perceptions and reduce the stigma of mental illness.

Stamp Out Stigma Campaign Goals

The goals of this year’s campaign are rooted in the “three Rs”:

  • Recognize when you or your loved ones need help.
  • Re-educate yourself and others about mental health and the resources available to get help.
  • Reduce stigma, insensitivity and roadblocks to care.

According to the ABHW, in America:

  • Twenty-six percent of adults experience a diagnosable mental illness disorder in any given year.
  • More than 22 million have a substance-use disorder.
  • Twenty-one percent of children and teens ages 9 to 17 have a diagnosable mental or addictive illness.

The ABHW also notes that despite the prevalence of these conditions, less than one-third of adults actually seek help.

“Mental illness and addiction are treatable,” said Steve Blake, MHN’s vice president of Clinical Operations. “Yet many people don’t seek help due to the stigma surrounding them. The Stamp Out Stigma campaign aims to reduce that stigma by encouraging people to talk openly about mental illness and addiction.”

As the ABHW points out, up to 90 percent of those who get help are able to significantly reduce symptoms and improve their quality of life.

“Throughout the year, Health Net is planning to share information about this important issue,” said Blake. “And we encourage everyone to support the campaign by visiting www.stampoutstigma.com.”
