TOKYO-- Sony Corp. said Tuesday that after months of delays it will start selling its flagship PlayStation 4 videogame console in mainland China.

The Japanese entertainment and electronics giant said that sales will kick off from Friday next week. Its hand-held entertainment Vita device will also go on sale.

Sony said last week it has already sold more than 20 million PlayStation 4 units. The solid performance of the company's videogame segment has prompted chief executive Kazuo Hirai to designate the unit an important investment target over the next few years.

If Sony's console is able to gain a foothold in the massive Chinese market, it would likely give sales of the already-popular game console another shot in the arm.

In China, Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox One is already available, while Nintendo Co. hasn't announced any plans to sell its Wii U console in the world's second-largest economy.

Along with the consoles, several localized game titles will also be made available, Sony said. The Japanese company had initially planned to commence sales in January but put the plan off due to last-minute requests from Chinese authorities.
