American International Group Inc. said former Chief Executive Robert H. Benmosche died Friday after battling lung cancer since 2010.

Mr. Benmosche, who left the company in September after four years at the helm, had undergone treatment for lung cancer since 2010, the company said in a release. Mr. Benmosche, 70 years old, led the company through one of the biggest bailout packages of the financial crisis, which it has since repaid.

Mr. Benmosche died Friday morning at NYU Langone Medical Center with his family at his side, the company said.

"Bob was one of the most inspirational and successful leaders in corporate America by any measure," said AIG chairman Robert S. Miller in a news release.
