ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A union
representation election scheduled for today at Con-way Freight's
Orlando, FL facility was cancelled
just hours before the polls were due to open when the Teamsters
Union notified the National Labor Relations Board that it was
withdrawing its petition for election.
Greg Lehmkuhl, president of
Con-way Freight, hailed the withdrawal as another victory for
Con-way Freight's employees, who have been the target of union
organizing efforts over the past six months."I want to commend our
employees in Orlando for their
patience, perseverance and commitment to learning the facts about
the Teamsters and what they were promising," he noted. "We
believe that the withdrawal of the petition reflects the
realization by the Teamsters that our employees in Orlando understand the value of what they have
today, and recognize the advantages and opportunities they have in
being union-free."
Unions often withdraw election petitions when they don't believe
they can secure enough votes to win. The Orlando withdrawal marks the seventh defeat
for the Teamsters Union in their attempts to organize workers at
Con-way Freight. The Teamsters were rejected in previous elections
at Con-way Freight facilities in Bakersfield, Santa
Fe Springs and San Fernando Valley, CA; Manchester, NH; and Harlingen, TX. The
Teamsters also previously withdrew a petition for a vote at Con-way
Freight's facility in Irvine,
CA.
"I want to thank our employees in Orlando – and those employees throughout our
network who also have rejected the Teamsters -- for their support
and their confidence in our company," Lehmkuhl continued. "We
remain convinced that our path to success lies in maintaining an
open, respectful and direct relationship with our employees without
the interference of a third party."
Con-way Freight currently does not have a contract with
Teamsters Union at any of its nearly 300 facilities in the U.S.
