LAWRENCE, Mass., Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NxStage® Medical,
Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTM), a leading manufacturer of innovative
dialysis products, today announced Nancy
Lisak, RN, as the winner of its Nurse Hero Campaign. Lisak
received over 4,000 votes from patients, care partners and
colleagues to top 41 other Nurse Hero nominees. The campaign is a
first-of-its-kind home hemodialysis (HHD) nurse recognition that
honors the important role these nurses play in helping patients to
receive potentially life-changing dialysis therapy. NxStage and
Lisak's employer, Affiliated Dialysis Center (ADC), will recognize
Lisak at a special ceremony on November 5,
2014 at ADC's corporate headquarters in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Faced with kidney disease herself, Lisak identifies directly
with the renal failure community and has always believed this
career chose her. Her patients at ADC's Elk Grove Village attribute their success with
home hemodialysis therapy to her passion, education and support.
Social worker Joyce Crement has
worked with Lisak for four years at Elk
Grove Village and nominated her for the award because of her
immense dedication to patients over the course of their work
together.
"I am humbled to receive this recognition from both my patients
and the renal care community," said Lisak. "I hope this award
inspires other home hemodialysis nurses to always strive to exceed
patient expectations, build trust, provide the highest quality of
care possible, and help patients live independently."
"Nancy's commitment to her patients is truly contagious," said
Crement. "She believes in each patient's independence, and helps
them develop the confidence to be successful. The genuine
relationships she has cultivated demonstrate her strength as an
educator and advocate for the best patient care."
"NxStage congratulates Nancy and all 41 other nominees on this
wonderful recognition by their patients and peers, whose 13,000
collective votes testify to each nurse's commitment to providing
extraordinary patient care," said NxStage President, Joe Turk. "Home hemodialysis nurses deserve this
recognition and more, as they play the critical role in ensuring
dialyzors have access to life-changing HHD therapy."
Despite the health benefits that home hemodialysis may
provide to those with chronic kidney disease, this form of therapy
is not for everyone. The reported benefits of home hemodialysis may
not be experienced by all patients. The risks associated with
hemodialysis treatments in any environment include, but are not
limited to, high blood pressure, fluid overload, low blood
pressure, heart-related issues, and vascular access complications.
The medical devices used in hemodialysis therapies may add
additional risks including air entering the bloodstream and blood
loss due to clotting or accidental disconnection of the blood
tubing set. Certain risks are unique to the home. Treatments at
home are done without the presence of medical personnel and on-site
technical support. Patients and their partners must be trained on
what to do and how to get medical or technical help if
needed.
