Chase Rankin Becomes President and Publisher of Arizona Daily Star
TUCSON, AZ--(Marketwired - Mar 10, 2014) - Chase Rankin, vice
president of advertising, sales and marketing, has been promoted to
president and publisher of the Arizona Daily Star.
The announcement was made today by Lee Enterprises, Incorporated
(NYSE: LEE) and Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI). The Daily
Star is owned by Lee, and its business operations are owned
jointly by Lee and Gannett.
Rankin, 39, succeeds John M. Humenik, who has advanced to Lee
group publisher for Tucson and Madison, Wisconsin.
In meetings this afternoon with the staff, Humenik said:
"Chase's elevation to a greater level of responsibility is a
well-earned promotion. He's done a terrific job bringing innovative
solutions to our advertisers, as well as being engaged with our
community and staff. His passion for growing our business coupled
with his almost limitless energy and strategic leadership will keep
the Daily Star strong for years to come."
In his three years as the Daily Star's vice president
of advertising, sales and marketing, Rankin received a Lee
President's award for Innovation, and was a key leader in helping
the organization earn Lee's highest honor, Enterprise of the Year,
in 2013 and become a finalist for the award in 2012.
Rankin began his newspaper career at the Des Moines
Register and moved to the Minneapolis Star Tribune in
2000. At the Star Tribune he held multiple sales positions
and won the sales person of the year award before becoming
automotive sales manager in 2004. In 2006 he joined Lee Enterprises
as director of the Suburban Journals in St. Louis, earning a Lee
President Award for the launch of the Journals' websites. Before
his promotion to Tucson, he was director of advertising at Lee's
River Valley Newspaper Group based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. There,
he helped the team win Lee's Enterprise of the Year award in
2011.
Rankin comes from a newspaper family. His parents published
weekly newspapers and continue to own and operate multiple
specialty trade magazines. He is a graduate of Drake University,
where he earned a degree in advertising management and a master's
degree in integrated corporate communications. He and his wife,
Lynn, reside in Oro Valley, Arizona, where they have a 9-year-old
son, 2-year-old daughter, and a newborn baby boy.
"I am honored and excited by this opportunity to lead the
Daily Star," he said. "We have a proven record of success
helping our readers connect with the community and advertisers
reaching their desired markets. We look forward to furthering our
mission of serving Tucson with even more engagement, innovations
and value. Tucson is a great community, and my wife and I feel it's
a privilege to raise our family here."
