Taiwanese solar-cell maker Motech Industries Inc. (6244.OT), 20%-owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM), plans to shut its polysilicon manufacturing unit in the U.S. amid falling prices and is also looking to sell the unit.
Motech said in a statement Tuesday that the unit, AE Polysilicon Corp., will stop production also because it still hasn't reached economies of scale since it was established in 2006.
Motech owns around 33% of AE Polysilicon, based in Fairless Hills in Pennsylvania. Total S.A. (TOT) owns 25.4% of AEP.
