The Wood River Refinery, a joint venture owned by ConocoPhillips (COP) and Cenovus Energy Inc.(CVE), in Roxana, Illinois, said emissions of sulfur dioxide were routed to the plant's safety flare stack on Tuesday night after a wet gas compressor at an unspecified process unit had tripped off line.
The report to Illinois state environmental regulators said the release was ongoing about an hour and a half after it began at 8:30 p.m. CDT and that troubleshooting was underway to determine the cause and needed repair.
WRB Refining's operating JV partner, ConocoPhillips, typically doesn't comment on day-to-day refining operations.
The Wood River refining complex is capable of refining 306,000 barrels of crude oil a day.
