Southern Co. (SO) said it expects a decision on its license application for a new nuclear reactor on Thursday, setting the stage for what may be the first new license approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in decades.
The company is seeking permission to build new nuclear reactors at its Vogtle plant in Georgia. It said Tuesday in a press release that its chief executive would speak with reporters after a Nuclear Regulatory Commission vote on the issue, expected Thursday morning.
A favorable vote from the NRC would be an important milestone for Southern. The company is also seeking a U.S. loan guarantee for the project.
