Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) Saturday reported the restart of a process unit at its Joliet refinery in Channahon, Ill.
The restart process caused a release of an unknown amount of nitrogen dioxide from a flare stack at around 2:52 p.m. CDT on Saturday, a filing to the U.S. National Response Center said.
Exxon Mobil did not identify the unit involved in the restart, but traders doing business in the Midwest region said recently that work was being performed at the plant's key gasoline-making unit since late April.
The company said previously that compressor problems at the 238,600-barrel-a-day refinery had caused flaring and emissions, but wouldn't comment on the unit, or units, involved.
