Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) on Monday said it had shut a crude distillation unit at its joint-venture Sarpom refinery in Trecate, Italy, after a fire occurred there Saturday.
The fire began at 0845 local time (0645 GMT) and was extinguished around 45 minutes later, an Exxon spokeswoman in Italy said. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated. Exxon said it was too early to estimate when the atmospheric distillation unit would restart.
The company is assessing the damage and working on contingency plans for refinery supplies. The Sarpom refinery provides jet fuel to the nearby Malpensa airport.
The plant is 74.1% owned by Esso Italiana, a unit of Exxon Mobil. Erg SpA (ERG.MI) owns the remaining share.
