Service on Amtrak passenger trains traveling south of Washington, D.C., was disrupted Thursday afternoon by the derailment of a CSX Corp. (CSX) freight train hauling coal near Quantico, Va., Amtrak said.
The railroad was shut down at Quantico with all tracks blocked, it said.
All Amtrak trains that were stopped en route were being held at Amtrak stations from Washington to Richmond, Va. Passengers were being informed of the situation.
A number of Amtrak trains were canceled, and the company said it was trying to find alternate transportation but expected more than 2,300 passengers would be affected throughout Thursday evening.
