Adding a buy

To add a stock to your portfolio you must either click on the 'Add Buy' button from the tool bar, or click on the 'Click here to add a stock' message under the first table on the Summary page. This will take you to the 'Enter a Buy Transaction' form.

  • ENTER A BUY TRANSACTION FORM

Date/Time: fields are pre filled but can be altered manually. There are two fields at the end of the line that denote hours and minutes. The field minutes has to be filled in manually even if it's just with two zeros, (the minutes field is the most often forgotten when you receive a check form failure).

Epic: field takes the given epic of your shares (with a tick box for the admission of non LSE stock epics.

Quantity: Enter the number of shares you have actually or notionally purchased.

Price per share: Enter the unit cost of the shares
Note: when a quote appears in the monitor list it is described in pence the decimal point being used to denote fractions of a penny. This is not the case however the case when using the 'Price per share' field. The point should represent the break between pounds and pence. So for example on the monitor a quote of forty two and a half pence would be '42.5', but in portfolio it should be typed in as '0.425'.

Charges: The amount the broker charged you for making the transaction, this is often a standard one off payment.

Total: Enter the product of the (Quantity of shares) x (Price per share) + (Charges)

Description: An optional field which allows you to enter extra information about the trade.

When you have finished click on the 'Check form' button.
If you have filled the form out correctly the screen will redraw adding an extra button called 'Add Buy', click on this and the share will be added to the portfolio.

If however you have made a mistake in totalling the 'Enter a buy transaction' screen will reappear and automatically correct the total offering you the option to 'Add Buy'. So make sure you check the total after clicking on 'Check form'.

If you have entered inappropriate information into a field the when the 'Enter a Buy Transaction' screen redraws itself, a flashing red arrow will appear against the problematical field.

In 'summary' the new buy will now appear in the table. Using the tool bar go to 'transactions' and you will see the purchase listed.

If you go to the cashbook section you will see that the cost of the purchase will have been automatically deducted. For the sake of this tutorial we will assume there was no money in the cashbook so the sum represented will be a minus amount.
